A New Era

Life has such a funny way of presenting changes and opportunities to you. A couple of months ago on a whim I decided to interview for a radio position that I was told opened up. Although I've done work with Edugaytion in the past, I'd never really worked in radio, so I wasn't sure how far I would get in the interview process. The interview was mainly a discussion of music, in which I am well-versed, and shortly after I found out that I had won the position!

Fast forwarding to now, you can hear me over the air and online from Monday to Friday on 91.9 FM WUOT Knoxville or at wuot.org. Gaining radio experience has been amazing, but more than anything I love listening and learning new music. Having to fill three hours a day with classical music may seem like a challenge (which it is), but I'm enjoying every moment of it.

When it comes to my musical style and taste, I think it's important to expose people to music that is relevant to our lives today, so most of the compositions on my show were written after about 1920, with many of the works being by 21st century composers. Of course, we have to recognize the greats like Beethoven and Mozart from time to time, but I'm loving what I'm doing for the classical music audience in Knoxville. I've also made a point to incorporate tons of Wind Ensemble music, which, in my opinion, simply isn't heard enough. As I type this post, I'm listening to a recording of the Mason Bates Violin Concerto, which I'll air sometime today.

In addition to my new radio host position, I'm still playing with the Knoxville Symphony and bartending on the weekends at Stillhouse. I have no days off, and I barely sleep, but for now I'm very excited to ground myself even deeper into my career as a musician and socialite, and to move one step closer to calling Knoxville "home".

All I need now is a man... :-)
